Route Survey Services
Plan the run before the run.
Route surveys are pre-run reconnaissance for oversize loads — verifying overhead clearances, turn radii, road conditions, weight limits, and alternate routes before the load commits to a route. Magic Valley Piloting offers route survey services throughout Idaho and the surrounding Western states. Call (208) 924-3720.
What a route survey covers
Every overpass, traffic signal, sign gantry, and utility line on the route — measured against the load profile with margin.
Tight intersections, on/off-ramp curves, urban corners. Identifying where the load needs both lanes or a sweep across.
Bridge weight postings vs. axle weight of the rig. Identifying limited bridges that need detour or special permission.
Steep grades, soft shoulders, lane width restrictions, construction zones, recent storm damage.
If the primary route has a problem, what’s the workable Plan B? Survey identifies it before the load needs it.
Comparing actual road conditions against permit routing — flagging anywhere the permit and reality disagree.
When you need a route survey
- Loads exceeding standard permitted dimensions
- New routes the carrier hasn’t run before
- Super-load moves where any clearance issue is a project-ending problem
- Routes through construction-active corridors where conditions shift weekly
- High-value loads where pre-run certainty is worth the survey cost
What every run includes.
DOT-compliant amber strobes and beacon lights, visible front and rear.
“Oversize Load” / “Wide Load” banners and red flags per state requirements.
CB and handheld for constant communication with the load driver.
State pilot car certifications carried, permits reviewed, run docs in order.
